KNOXVILLE, Tn.—March 6, 2020—The Tennessee Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (TJSHS), the premier showcase for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) research by high school students, is pleased to announce the 2020 winners of the 55th Tennessee JSHS regional competition.
The regional competition gives students (grades 9-12) from across the state of Tennessee a chance to present original scientific research in a public forum and compete for scholarships and cash awards, while participating in hands-on workshops, panel discussions, career explorations, and research lab visits. The regional event is jointly sponsored by the research offices of the United States Departments of the Army, Navy, and Air Force in cooperation with the University of Tennessee.
The Tennessee regional winners, announced on Friday at the awards dinner and ceremony in Knoxville, TN, presented their original research to a panel of University of Tennessee and local scientist judges. The top five students will now advance to the National JSHS competition in Virginia Beach, VA this April. In addition to a fully-funded trip, the first, second, and third place regional finalists earned scholarships ranging from $1,000-$2,000. The third and fourth place finalists will receive the funded trip to Nationals as well.
“The Tennessee Regional winners feature some of the state’s brightest young minds who are conducting phenomenal research. We look forward to watching them compete on a national stage with 200 other regional winners from across the US,” said Marisa Moazen, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Engagement and director for the Tennessee Regional Event.
